What is my ideal weight?

To set a guideline, we can use the Lorenz Vandervael formula to calculate their ideal weight.

For women: 50 + ((length in cm – 150) x 0.6)
For men: 50 + ((length in cm – 150) x 0.7)

The resulting number is the ideal weight in kg. This can deviate about 10%. A deviation of 10-30% indicates (slight) overweight.

Ideal fat percentage

The fat percentage largely determines how healthy you are and how many (or few) health risks you run. Certain diseases or conditions are amplified by the amount of fat in a person's body. Especially the place where the fat is, largely determines how unhealthy you are. That is why you also have to measure in four places in the skinfold measurement to determine the fat percentage and not just in one.

There are standards for a healthy fat percentage. The percentage differs per gender (male/female) and age group. On average, a fat percentage of between 15% and 25% can be called healthy. Women have a higher fat percentage than men. For men, an average fat percentage of 18% to 25% applies, for women 25% to 31%. However, this can be divided into age groups.

For men between the ages of 17 and 29, a healthy fat percentage of 10% to 15% applies. For women of the same age, that percentage is between 20% and 25%. For men between the ages of 30 and 39, a fat percentage of 15% to 17.5% is healthy. For women in the same age group this is 25% to 27.5%. For men over 40 years, an average healthy fat percentage of 20% applies, for women over 40 years 30%.

There are even more specific percentages for the age group of 40 years and older. For example, for men aged 40 to 59 it is between 11% and 22%, for women of that age 23% to 34%. For men aged 60 to 79, a fat percentage of 13% to 25% is good, for women in that age group 24% to 36%.

Anything below and above the reported fat percentages is too low or too high and may pose health risks. Only a doctor can determine whether there really is a health risk.

 BMI stands for Body Mass Index and was invented by a Belgian! BMI is also sometimes called the Quetelet Index, after the Gentenaar after the Gentenaar Adolphe Quételet (1796-1874). He was originally a mathematician and astronomer, but he was also interested in social statistics and made graphs of, for example, the death rates per month in Brussels. He also developed ideas about the “average person”. He presented his results in graphs.

The BMI is a value that represents the ratio between height and weight. By calculating the BMI , an estimate can be made about the amount of body fat. The BMI is therefore more accurate than the weight, since we take the height of the person into account. An ideal BMI is between 20 and 25. A high or low BMI indicates too thick or too thin. The BMI is only an indication.
